Reading The Key Essay 8 of 17

Out of Context

STERLING SILVER, COPPER, WORDS OF VARIOUS AUTHORS
ETCHED, FABRICATED, OXIDIZED
SCALE VARIES

Continuing with the mystery of removing words from their context, “Out of Context” is an assortment of pendants, earrings and rings with interesting phrases of text etched, stamped or typed into the strips of metal. (Pictured at right is a grouping of pendants.)

Each form employs simplicity, yet features the marks of the metalsmithing process that inform their individuality.

The artist has not revealed the sources of the enigmatic phrases, thus allowing the wearer to assign their own story to the prompt given. As with the other metal structures in the Reading The Key series, the metalsmith has used oxidation and her own signature texturing processes to suggest the passage of time in an attempt to connect the wearer to object to story.
