How does commissioning an artist work?
*We talk.
First is our general introduction to the idea. Usually the potential client contacts Ginger with a few questions like, "Can you…," or "How much would it be to…." This is when the seed is planted.
*We "meet."
The conversation continues… sometimes over coffee, sometimes online or via telephone, often at the studio table. This is when the seedling emerges, sketches are developed and a design is generated. Often the client is seeking to commemorate a memory, honor a loved one, or simply express love. Sometimes the sharing of all these ideas happens in phases, as Ginger may deem it necessary to hike a mountain, sketch some more, and then reconvene with said sketches. At this point in the process there may be fittings or assessments of old jewelry that can be recycled or redirected, and the contract and deposit are completed.
*Then, to the bench.
The metal dust and tools begin to fly as the benchwork begins. This part of the process may include outsourcing for casting or CAD work, but for the most part each piece is created step-by-step at Ginger's bench. Even when those two steps are outsourced, Ginger still oversees the process carefully and completes the final stages herself, making sure to have hands-on time with every piece. Ginger's goal here is to translate the client's story into metal. The client is invited to visit the piece in process as often as desired, either in person or via emailed images from the bench.
*Project complete.
After the benchwork is done, the piece is photographed for records and/or portfolio use, and the piece is packaged tastefully and appropriately before being turned over to the client. We trust that years of enjoyment of the piece will follow, during which time we offer complimentary cleaning and maintenance checks.
